Alabama junior defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick has been named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday morning. Fitzpatrick was honored for his performance in UA’s 27-19 win at Texas A&M this past weekend. The selection is the second conference defensive player of the week award – and third weekly conference honor overall – of Fitzpatrick’s career.

Fitzpatrick lived up to his billing as one of the nation’s most versatile defenders on Saturday evening, lining up at safety, cornerback, nickel back and dime linebacker for the Crimson Tide. He accounted for five tackles, including three tackles for loss, one forced fumble, a pass breakup and a fourth quarter interception that thwarted an Aggie drive at the Tide one-yard line. Fitzpatrick also recovered a late Texas A&M onside kick attempt to seal the win. Alabama held the Aggies to 308 yards in total offense, 140 yards below their season average, and just 19 points, A&M’s lowest output of the 2017 campaign.

This marks the second time in Fitzpatrick’s career that he has been recognized for his performance against the Aggies at Kyle Field. The Old Bridge, N.J., native was named the SEC Freshman of the Week in 2015 after setting an Alabama record with two interception returns for touchdowns to lead UA to a 41-23 win in the Tide’s last visit to College Station. Fitzpatrick earned his first SEC Defensive Player of the Week award in 2016 for a three-interception performance that included a school-record 100-yard interception return for a touchdown at Arkansas.
