According to a report by Chris Low of ESPN, the Alabama Crimson Tide will name veteran quarterback Ty Simpson the starting quarterback.

The team was notified on August 11 that Simpson will be named the starting quarterback.

Simpson is a college football veteran, although he has yet to start a game for the Crimson Tide. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound quarterback from Martin, Tennessee, is entering his redshirt junior season at Alabama. Simpson beat out redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell for the starting job.

Over three years at Alabama, Simpson has thrown for 381 yards and no touchdowns. During his career, Simpson also ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

During Alabama's scrimmage on Saturday, Simpson commanded the offense well, according to a source in attendance.

During spring practice, Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb named Simpson the starting quarterback, with the caveat of "if Alabama had to play a game that Saturday." At SEC Media Days, Kalen DeBoer echoed the sentiment.

The narrative continued throughout fall camp, with Simpson leading the first unit for much of fall camp. Grubb explained what Simpson needed to do to officially be named the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide during his first media availability of camp.

"He's got to do it every day between now and Florida State when we start that preparation," Grubb said. "Whoever that person is, got to come out and be able to show that it's clearly him, and that's what this football team needs," Grubb said.

Simpson's first career start will come in Tallahassee, Florida, against the Florida State Seminoles on August 30.
