Alabama Soccer Comes Up Short in SEC Quarterfinal
After an impressive regular season and high expectations for the postseason, Alabama soccer had a different outcome this week.
The Alabama soccer team fell to No. 14 South Carolina (9-2-7) in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament this past Tuesday.
Midfielder Nadia Ramadan scored the Tide's only goal in the match, completing a penalty kick in the 85th minute. Ramadan's goal was her seventh of the season for Alabama.
South Carolina scored a total of four goals this game against the Crimson Tide. Amanda Patrick scored South Carolina's first goal from a corner kick in the 11th minute before Catherine Barry converted her first of two penalty kicks (33rd and 84th minutes). Autumn Cayelli of USC also scored, this time from outside the box in the 75th minute.
Alabama finished the season with 10 wins, 6 losses, and 5 ties. At home, they posted 6 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. Alabama's offense netted a total of 43 goals with 2 goals per game. Alabama's defense allowed a total of 30 goals with 10.8 shots per game.
Head coach Wes Hart shared his thoughts on the loss and season.
"Disappointing end to the season for sure. We showed glimpses of promising soccer. We competed well and showed we could play with a lot of teams, but we just weren't good enough to close games out. We had leads over Tennessee, Georgia and Auburn and weren't able to finish them off. All three of those teams are NCAA Tournament teams. We certainly expected more from ourselves this year," said Hart.
Hart also shared the importance this year's seniors and what they meant to Alabama.
"Tough way to send our seniors out, many of whom are used to playing into mid to late November. We've gone to second round of NCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons, but I am grateful for everything they gave to this program and there is no doubt they made a huge impact on Bama soccer," said Hart.
