Alabama Women’s Basketball Falls 62-48 at #17 Nebraska

The Alabama women’s basketball team hung with No. 17/12 Nebraska for the majority of the game, but a 16-4 run in the second half helped the Cornhuskers to a 62-48 win on Monday night in Pinnacle Bank Arena. With the loss, the Crimson Tide dips to 0-2, while the win brings the Huskers to 2-0.

Daisha Simmons led Alabama all around in game with 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists. She was followed by Shafontaye Myers, who added seven points and five rebounds for the Tide. Nebraska’s Emily Cady notched the game’s lone double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Hooper, the Huskers’ two-time All-American and player of the year candidate was limited to eight points but did pull down a game-high 13 boards.

Nebraska knocked down a pair of jumpers in the early goings to take a 4-0 lead, but Alabama would even the score at 8-8 after Myers went coast-to-coast off the steal at the 15:36 mark. The Huskers used a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to pull in front 17-10, however the Tide responded with a 14-6 run of its own to lead, 24-23, with 3:28 to go in the first. Nebraska scored the final five points of the half to head to the break up 29-24.

The Huskers opened the second half with another five unanswered to take their first double-digit advantage of the game, 34-24, with 17:40 remaining. Alabama chipped away to cut its deficit to six, but the Huskers would then make their run over the next five minutes. Alabama pulled within 13 with 4:14 to go but was unable to get any closer down the stretch.

Nebraska took advantage of its trips to the free throw line, hitting 20 of its 24 attempts and out-rebounded the Tide 42-35. For the game, Alabama shot 31.7 percent (20-63), while the Huskers hit 38.8 percent of their attempts (19-49).

The Tide remains on the road for its third game of the season when it takes on No. 2 Duke on Sunday, Nov. 17. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
