ALL-USA Boys Basketball Coach of the Year Jack Doss Discusses His Historic Career
Mae Jemison head basketball coach Jack Doss set a state record when he won his 10th state championship this season. His 33-4 record and 5A state title earned him the ALL-USA Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
The Gary Harris Show had a chance to catch up with Doss to discuss his historic career, including his latest honor.
"USA Today called and I wasn't sure if somebody was playing a trick on me," Doss told host Gary Harris.
After winning his 10th state title this season, a state record, Doss was named ALL-USA Boys Basketball Coach of the Year. Doss has won state titles at not just one school, but four including Hayes in Birmingham (1981 and 1982), Butler in Huntsville (2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2011), J.O. Johnson in Huntsville (2015 and 2016) and now, Mae Jemison. With an all-time record of 812-329, Doss trails only three coaches for all-time wins in AHSAA history: Eugene Mason (919), Cap Brown (890) and Willie Scoggins (864).
"The wins don't matter. It's the young men, and its a lot of fun to be apart of their lives. Especially, when you know we may have eight of them without dads and living at home alone. It just gives you an opportunity to share Christ with some of those guys and it's been a blessing to be a part of coaching."
He's coached many kids through the years, but you'd be hard-pressed to find one more talented than John Petty. The two-time Mr. Basketball in Alabama will play for the Crimson Tide at the next level. Doss describes Petty as a tough player with a chip on his shoulder, unselfish with the ball, and a smart zone reader. When asked his opinion on how Petty and Collin Sexton will play together Doss replied, "It's going to be interesting, Avery bringing those guys together. John and Collin are good friends and are going to room together. Like I said, these kids are winners."
