On Wednesday evening, Auburn’s sophomore wide receiver and punt returner, Malcom Simmons, was arrested in Lee County for Domestic Violence with strangulation or suffocation, according to Lee County's recent arrests database. Simmons’ bond is active and currently set at $20,000.

Simmons had a solid freshman campaign. The four-star wide receiver from Benjamin Russell High School, who was part of the Tigers' 2023 recruiting class, recorded 451 receiving yards on 40 receptions to accompany his three touchdowns for his first season on the Plains, while Cam Coleman, who was also in the 2023 class, tallied 598 receiving yards on 37 catches to go along with his eight touchdowns on the season. Together, the two freshmen combined for over 1,000 yards of receiving for the Tigers last season.

The Montgomery native was set to play a vital role in a talent-packed wide receiver room with Hugh Freeze raving about Simmons over the spring, and pairing Simmons beside guys like Coleman, Eric Singleton, a Georgia Tech transfer who was one of the top targets in the portal this past offseason, and Horatio Fields, a transfer from Wake Forest who tallied over 450 receiving yards in 2024. Simmons was looking to have a breakout sophomore season after showing a lot of promise last year, but that now appears to be in jeopardy following the recent news.

Simmons is the second Auburn football player to have been arrested in the past week, with redshirt freshman D.J. Barber being arrested and kicked off the team following his arrest on Trafficking Marijuana, Unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and Unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia in Dadeville last week.
