Beth Mowins Describes Her First NFL Play-By-Play Broadcast

Beth Mowins has been calling college football games as an ESPN and CBS play-by-play broadcaster since 2005, but this week she made history by becoming the first female to call a nationally-televised NFL game. She did so with with Rex Ryan at her side during in the booth for the Monday Night Football matchup between the Chargers and Broncos.

Mowins joined Gary Harris Wednesday morning to describe how she prepared to become the second female to call an NFL game since 1987. Monday night felt like a dream scenario for Mowins.

"You prepare for everything as a play-by-play announcer, and then the game gets in the way," Mowins said. "You don't have to talk about any of the periphery stuff and you just get to talk football."

Mowins continued the discussion by describing how she has grasped the fact that she has made history.

"You know, I think a little bit. I have always tried to approach it as I am a play-by-play announcer. The fact that gender is a discussion at all, I always felt should be secondary."

One moment that Mowins remembered vividly made her appreciate that she was able to reach a broad audience.

"There was a little girl that came down to the field during pregame, she had an ESPN tee-shirt on, and she had a microphone with her."

It has been far more rewarding for Mowins to have had the ability to inspire a younger generation to chase their dreams, regardless the circumstance, than any other implication.

"It's okay to be ambitious, its okay to be bold, it requires a lot of hard work, and if you want it bad enough you can figure out a way to go get it."
