A sewer pump malfunction resulted in hundreds of thousands of gallons of raw sewage being spilled into the Black Warrior River over the Independence Day weekend, and Black Warrior Riverkeeper is still looking for answers.

I spoke with Black Warrior Riverkeeper Nelson Brooke about the spill and its impact on the river and surrounding areas. Brooke advised that residents use caution and avoid areas impacted by the spill. Black Warrior Riverkeeper has an interactive map that shows the location of sites affected in the raw sewage leak; click HERE to view.

Brooke also asked that residents who were in these areas over the weekend get in touch with their agency. They're looking for people who were in the river or surrounding creeks who noticed anything out of the ordinary; if you noticed a strange smell, saw sewage in the river, or feel ill after swimming in or eating fish from the river, please contact Black Warrior Riverkeeper at (205) 458-0095.
