Cecil Hurt Analyzes the Departure of Les Miles from LSU [Audio]

Over the weekend, LSU made the first coaching move in the SEC with the firing of Les Miles after an 18-13 loss at Auburn.

Miles leaves LSU as the second winningest coach in Tigers football history with a 114-34 record.

During Tuesday’s edition of The Gary Harris Show, Tuscaloosa News sports editor Cecil Hurt examined the aftermath of LSU’s firing of Les Miles.

Hurt pointed to the lack of championship success in recent seasons as a primary reason for LSU making a coaching change four games into the season.

“I think that there’s clearly a strong contingent of LSU fans who wanted a change, for whatever reason, who wanted to win championships. That’s really what it boils down to. Wasn’t an issue of just wins and losses, but wanted to be competing for national championships and Southeastern Conference championships. Didn’t feel like the end of the season results were matching the recruiting class results.” Hurt said.

The veteran Tuscaloosa News sports editor later analyzed the contributing reasons for the state of LSU football and Nick Saban’s reaction to the firing of Miles.

While assistant coach Ed Orgeron took over as LSU’s interim head coach Monday, Hurt offered his thoughts on the chances of former Ole Miss coach taking over permanently in Baton Rouge.

“I think they would have to win every game. I think they would have to make the playoff.” Hurt said.
