It was announced Tuesday afternoon by NBA Insider Michael Scotto that the Boston Celtics will exercise their team option for former Alabama basketball player and 2024-2025 NBA G League MVP JD Davison. The 2025-2026 team option is worth $2.27 million and is non-guaranteed.

After being selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, Davison has spent most of his professional career in the NBA G League. Over the last three years with the Maine Celtics, Davison's stats have improved each season, with his best performance coming last year when his impressive averages of 25.6 points, 7.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.4 steals led to him becoming the second NBA G League MVP since Tim Frazier in the 2014-2015 season.

In his first two seasons, Davison appeared in only 20 games for the Boston Celtics—12 in the 2022-2023 season and eight in the 2023-24 season—providing extra depth at guard when needed. However, this past season, Davison played in 20 games, including four in his postseason debut with the Celtics, totaling 4 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds.

Entering the league as a one-and-done player at the University of Alabama, Davison was just 19 when the Celtics drafted him in 2022. He will turn 23 in October as he enters his fourth NBA season, giving him a huge advantage. This will allow him to continue developing with several years remaining before reaching the estimated "prime" age range of 27-30.

After spending most of his career on a two-way contract with the Celtics, Davison's deal was converted to a standard contract during the 2024-2025 season, and the Celtics will now pick up the team option for the upcoming season.
