Class of 2027 Guard Commits to Alabama MBB

Alabama men's basketball added to its 2027 recruiting class on Wednesday afternoon, with Yea Alabama, the Crimson Tide's NIL collective, announcing that 2027 guard Chase Lumpkin has committed to the Crimson Tide.

"Alabama feels like home,: Lumpkin told Yea Alabama. "I believe in Coach Oats, Coach Murphy, the coaching staff, the players, and what they're building. I'm excited about the culture, the development, the way they play, and the opportunity to compete at the highest level."

Lumpkin ended his comments to Yea Alabama with, "New chapter. Same mindset. Roll Tide."

Lumpkin took an official visit to the Crimson Tide last weekend, September 5, for Alabama football's season-opening victory over the East Carolina Pirates. He also took official visits to Michigan and USC, with another visit scheduled to Louisville on September 26, according to 247 Sports. He held offers from those schools, plus Villanova, Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, and UConn, among others. He received 31 offers.

"There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about Lumpkin’s long-term future," 247 Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein wrote in his evaluation of Lumpkin. "He’s a big guard with long arms (6-foot-8 wingspan), a nose for the ball, and a budding versatile skill set. He already stuffs all columns of the stat sheet like few other players in high school basketball, averaging 17 points, nearly 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals per game in the recent EYBL season. He’s also young for his grade and won’t turn 18 until June of his senior year, so there’s plenty of time for him to keep tapping into his upside.

Lumpkin is a true combo-guard, with real on/off ball versatility. He may ultimately be capable of evolving into a big-lead guard, or full-time initiator (2:1 assist to turnover ratio), but isn’t quite that yet. He plays at his own pace, but is smoother and craftier than he is naturally explosive with his first-step. He doesn’t always separate easily in isos, and is better in transition or off a ball-screen. He’ll also play off the catch or threat of his jumper. He’s a volume shooter who made 32% of his threes, on 7 attempts per game, but he has naturally soft touch (79% free-throw) and a lot of long-term shooting potential. He’s capable of making some deep and tough shots now, but too willing to settle at times, which creates some subtle mechanical inconsistencies in both his base and follow-through that can make him streaky.

He could also be more efficient inside the lane. While he has a lot of tricks as a lay-up maker, and can even rise-up off two feet when he has a runway, he still shot just 48% at the rim, and was 10-32 from 5-15 feet. Part of that is that he’s not quite as bouncy through contact, but he also has room to keep sculpting a naturally bigger upper body.

The bottom line is that while Lumpkin is already versatile and productive, there’s still a lot of untapped potential as he keeps maturing physically and getting more efficient."

Lumpkin is ranked as the No. 25 overall player in the 2027 class, according to 247 Sports. He is the first commitment for the Crimson Tide in the 2027 recruiting class.
