Check It Out: Who Earned UA Coaches Honors
The Alabama football coaching staff named seven players of the week to eight spots following the No. 8 Crimson Tide’s 66-10 win against Chattanooga last week. Malik Benson and Robbie Ouzts on offense; Jihaad Campbell, Caleb Downs, Trezmen Marshall and Dallas Turner on defense; and Downs and Will Reichard on special teams were all selected for their efforts against the Mocs.
Downs was the only dual recipient. Here's a further look:
Benson hauled in all three of his targets for 23 yards and a touchdown. The juco transfer converted one first down to go along with his scoring play from 20 yards out.
Ouzts got the starting nod against the Mocs, recording one catch for a seven-yard touchdown that reminded several of former H-back Michael Nysewander. He also returned one kickoff for a gain of 11 yards on special teams.
Campbell led the Tide defense with 10 total tackles, six of which were solo stops. He added one pass breakup and was credited with a quarterback hurry.
Downs accounted for seven total tackles and one pass breakup against the Mocs and helped the Tide defense limit UTC to only 233 total yards, including just 107 passing.
Marshall made an impact from his middle linebacker post on Senior Day by making six total tackles, four of which were solo stops.
Turner provided consistent pressure off the edge in the Tide’s final home matchup of 2023 as he totaled three tackles and a quarterback hurry.
Downs came in for Kool-Aid McKinstry at punt returner and finished with 90 combined yards on two returns and found the end zone thanks to an 85-yard return, the Tide’s first punt return for a score of the season.
Reichard ended his Bryant-Denny career by scoring 12 points against the Mocs, connecting on all nine PATs and making a 50-yard field goal. His 50-yarder was the eighth of his career, making him the Crimson Tide’s record holder for career 50-plus yard field goals.
The Hoover native added seven kickoffs for 439 yards with four touchbacks.
