The Washington Commanders have released former Alabama standout defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, according to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team.

According to Over the Cap, the move will save the Washington Commanders over $16 million in cap savings, while also incurring a dead cap hit of $6 million.

A senior leader at Alabama in 2016, Allen racked up the accolades in 2016 as Alabama made an appearance in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship before falling to Clemson. During his senior season, Allen won:

The Bronko Naguski Trophy
The Chuck Bednarik Award
The Lombardi Award
Unanimous All-American

In 2016, Allen totaled 69 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, two defensive touchdowns, and two pass breakups.

His star-studded Alabama career led to Allen being drafted in the first round, No. 17 overall, by the Washington Commanders in 2017.

Since 2017, Allen has been a formidable force along the front four for Washington. starting 108 of 109 possible games with 401 total tackles, 42 sacks, 60 tackles for loss, 118 quarterback hits, five passes defended, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He was a two-time Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2022.

The Commanders previously permitted Allen to seek a trade, but could not find a trade partner, leading to his release.

Allen just turned 30, and will now look to finish his NFL career with a new team.
