Crimson Tide QB Not Expected to Enter Transfer Portal
Alabama backup QB Ty Simpson is not expected to enter the transfer portal, according to Tim Watts of On3 Sports.
Simpson reportedly met with Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban Wednesday afternoon, informing the coach of his current decision to stay with the program.
Many fans called for a quarterback change following the Crimson Tide's week 2 loss to the Texas Longhorns, and they got their wish in week 3. Jalen Milroe was benched for Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner. Buchner was later benched in the game, and Simpson took over and led the Crimson Tide to a 17-3 victory over the USF Bulls.
Milroe re-entered the starting lineup the next week against Ole Miss and never looked back, leading the Crimson Tide to its 30th SEC championship while placing 6th in the Heisman Trophy voting. Milroe announced on Next Round Live that he would be returning for his fourth season.
The decision by Simpson comes as a shock to some fans, considering Milroe is returning and Alabama just signed five-star quarterback Julian Sayin.
Buchner entered the transfer portal and is returning to Notre Dame in 2024. He is currently the only Crimson Tide quarterback who entered the transfer portal.
Alabama has no shortage of quarterback depth. Behind Milroe and Simpson are Dylan Lonergan, Eli Holstein, and five-star signee Julian Sayin.
Coach Saban talks about competition being a key factor in development. With such a loaded room, the Crimson Tide could see a major jump at quarterback next season after an offseason full of competition.
