Davis Riley Advances to Round of 32 at 2016 U.S. Amateur
Alabama rising sophomore Davis Riley survived a two-hour plus rain delay and a comeback attempt by Matthew Wolff in the first day of match play at the 116th U.S. Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club on Wednesday. Riley, the No. 5 overall seed, advances to the round of 32 where he will take on Australian and No. 28 seed Curtis Luck on Thursday morning.
Riley picked up where he left off Tuesday’s round when he matched the course record with a 7-under par 63 to finish tied for fourth overall (4-under par 133) and earn a top five seed. Davis jumped out to a four-hole cushion through the first nine holes. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native was 3up through 13 holes, but a severe weather warning halted play.
After the long delay, play resumed and that’s when Wolff heated up., winning each of the next three holes to square the match, It stayed that way until the 19th hole when Riley recorded a par on 462-yard par 4 first hole, while Wolff missed his par putt for a bogey.
