DeBoer on Simpson, “You Appreciate What He’s Done”

Mobile, Ala. - Kalen DeBoer will go into his second season at Alabama with a quarterback battle on his hands. Jalen Milroe's appearance at the Senior Bowl signifies a new era of Alabama Football, one that will begin in March with the first spring practice without Jalen Milroe since 2021.

The expected winner of the battle, Ty Simpson, is entering his fourth year at Alabama after signing as a five-star with the Crimson Tide in December 2021. Most college quarterbacks would elect to transfer and play somewhere else as opposed to sitting for three seasons, but Simpson has remained faithful to Alabama and patient as Milroe led the Crimson Tide for two seasons. Now, it is Simpson's turn. Kalen DeBoer was asked about Simpson and his patience to sit for three seasons on Tuesday in Mobile.

"You certainly appreciate what [Ty Simpson] has done, continuing to work on what he can control, and that is himself," DeBoer said on Tuesday. "Continuing to build relationships to get ready for this chance that he has right in front of him - Not just step up as a leader, I think he's been doing that, but have that opportunity to step in and be the quarterback."

Simpson will compete with redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell for the starting quarterback job at Alabama.
