January 7th, 2013 the Alabama football team rolled onto victory, trouncing the top ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish to win its second consecutive BCS National Championship.

The title, was Alabama’s 3rd in four seasons as the Crimson Tide will go down in history as the only team to win consecutive BCS titles. That is because after the 2013 college football season, the Bowl Championship Series will be no more.

Upon the announcement of the college football playoffs last summer, the question arose of just how the playoff participants would be chosen.  After months of speculation the Sporting News reported that the new playoff system was beginning to take shape:

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told Sporting News on Thursday the new selection committee, likely to be ready by April's BCS meetings, will rely on a number of metrics similar to the current men's basketball selection committee — but polls won't be specifically part of the process.

… Bowlsby said the new college football selection committee will be larger than the men's basketball committee (10 members), but will be similar in the way they go about picking teams for the four playoff spots.

Shortly after the report was released, senior CBS College Football writer Bruce Feldman joined The Game and said that while the selection committee seems to be the direction the sport is headed, he’s reserving judgment until the committee is formed.

The new playoff system will bring in an estimated $5.64 billion dollars over the next 12 seasons (ESPN has bought the rights).  With that kind of money on the table, Feldman says the fans may be an afterthought.
