Former Crimson Tide RB Named NFC Offensive Player of the Week
After a standout performance against the Minnesota Vikings, former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs earned recognition as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
In the season finale, Gibbs posted 139 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a win over the division-rival Minnesota Vikings.
Now in his second season with the Detroit Lions, Gibbs has quickly emerged as one of the NFL's breakout stars. Following an MCL injury to starting running back David Montgomery, Gibbs stepped into the lead role and has exceeded expectations.
This season, Gibbs has rushed for 1,412 yards and 16 total touchdowns on 250 carries. In the passing game, he has 517 receiving yards, four touchdowns, and 52 receptions.
Before the new year concluded, the Lions traveled to the West Coast to face Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers. Gibbs delivered a grand performance, rushing for 117 yards on 18 carries, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt, and scoring a touchdown.
The No.1 seeded Detriot Lions are now in the playoffs waiting to see who they will host during the divisional round next weekend.
During his time at Alabama, Gibbs rushed for 926 yards and seven touchdowns in his junior year, averaging 6 yards per carry. He also finished second in school history for receptions by a running back with 44, earning second-team All-SEC honors as both a running back and an all-purpose player.
Gibbs was selected by the Detroit Lions with the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Alabama women's basketball team will face the No. 5-ranked Texas Longhorns this evening in Austin, Texas, at 7:00 p.m. CT.
