On April 29 Alabama forward Galin Smith entered the transfer portal. The post player from Mississippi narrowed his list down to three potential schools, Arizona State, VCU and Maryland. Today Smith announced on Twitter that he will transfer to Maryland for the upcoming 2020-21 season.

Smith played in all 31 games this season for the Crimson Tide, starting in seven. He averaged 3.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and .8 blocks in 13.1 minutes per game. He shot 42% from the free-throw line this past season. His best game this season came in a home victory over LSU, he scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Smith will be eligible immediately for the Terrapins as he graduated from Alabama this past spring semester. Maryland finished the 2019-20 season as Co-Big 10 regular season champions tied with Michigan State and Wisconsin. The Terrapins turned in a 24-7 record with a 14-6 conference record. Entering conference tournament week, Maryland was ranked 12th in the nation.

The Terps have two underclassmen forwards who averaged over 20 minutes per game last season. Smith will offer Maryland veteran leadership and toughness. He was recruited by Avery Johnson at Alabama and likely decided to leave the Crimson Tide due to Nate Oats's playing style.

Smith utilized social media to send a message to his new fans in College Park.
