Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy feels very comfortable with where Alabama stands after viewing the first scrimmage of fall camp last Saturday.

The former Alabama quarterback said on his radio show that Alabama's offense was "far ahead of schedule."

"Usually, first scrimmage, defense is way ahead of the offense," McElroy said. "Usually, first scrimmage, it's still a work in progress offensively. You're probably going to turn it over a time or two. You're probably going to have a couple of mistakes in protections. You're probably going to have some busted routes and things like that. On one hand, I can count the amount of mistakes made in the game."

McElroy said Alabama's success on offense started with Ty Simpson.

"I think Ty was really decisive," McElroy said. "I think he looked really, really comfortable."

He also said the primary competitor for the starting job against Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, also had a "really nice day." McElroy also said true freshman Keelon Russell had some velocity on his throws, but is still a work in progress.

"I think it's pretty clear what the pecking order is right now," McElroy said. "Doesn't mean it can't change. But I think you should feel good. Whoever plays quarterback for the Tide this year, I think they are going to be in good hands. I really feel that is going to be the case."

McElroy doesn't think there is a competition for the starting quarterback position. The Crimson Tide opens its season on August 30 against the Florida State Seminoles.
