Hank South Evaluates Alabama’s Signing Class
The Alabama Crimson Tide concluded the 2018 signing period with 20 prospects that plan to play football in a crimson and white uniform.
Unlike previous recruiting classes under Nick Saban, Alabama finished outside the top five nationally in most of the major recruiting services.
Following the signing period, BamaOnline recruiting reporter Hank South provided his thoughts on Alabama’s signing class for 2018 during Thursday’s edition of The Blitz.
Despite finishing outside the top five, the BamaOnline recruiting reporter believes that Alabama reeled in a good signing class.
“I think overall, you have to look at this class, early signing period and yesterday, as a very good class.” South said.
South detailed the Crimson Tide’s signing class in the secondary including the profiles of Patrick Surtain Jr. and Eddie Smith.
Concerning Surtain, the BamaOnline recruiting reporter analyzed his future in college and as a potential NFL prospect.
“I think that kid’s a sure thing three and out type player, three years and done type player.” South said.
Regarding Smith, South thinks very highly of the Slidell, Louisiana native and compared him to one of Saban’s former defensive backs from the 2015 national championship squad.
“This kid plays at a four-star level. If we look back on this class in a few years, he could be that Eddie Jackson-type guy as far as wasn’t as highly rated, came on late but ended up being arguably one of the best players on the defense.” South said.
Outside of Bobby Brown’s decision to sign with Texas A&M, South observed one noticeable surprise from Wednesday.
“The only true, I think, surprise was Justyn Ross picking Clemson at the last minute.” South said.
