Oatis was ranked as a 4-star in Alabama's 2022 class, which ranked No. 2 in the nation. Oatis chose the Tide over SEC foes Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and LSU.

Oatis broke out during his freshman season, racking up 24 tackles and starring as a run stuffer. Earning Oatis earned All-SEC freshman honors from league coaches.
