Recent winners of the Mackey Award include some of the best tight ends arguably in college football history, including Tyler Warren from Penn State in 2024, Brock Bowers from Georgia in 2023 and 2022, and Kyle Pitts from Florida in 2020.

If Cuevas does bring home the Mackey Award during the 2025 college football season, he would be the first Mackey Award winner in Alabama football history. He is among 46 candidates nominated to the watch list. Semifinalists will be announced on October 30, with finalists announced on November 26. The 2025 John Mackey Award will be presented to the winner during ESPN's College Football Awards Show on December 12.

Cuevas, a redshirt senior from Los Angeles, California, is entering his second season at Alabama after spending the 2023 season with Kalen DeBoer as a member of the Washington Huskies. During his first season with the Crimson Tide, Cuevas appeared in all 13 games, playing a significant role on special teams and rotating on offense. When he was on offense, Cuevas hauled in 16 receptions for 218 yards and one touchdown.

Cuevas is expected to step into a starting role as Alabama's top tight end for the 2025 season following the departures of CJ Dippre and Robbie Outz to the NFL in April.
