How Keelon Russell Overcame Sloppy Start in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- There are rough starts to football games, and then there is how sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell started his first road game against the Kentucky Wildcats:

Intentional grounding, tipped pass-turned pick-six, strip sack by the same defender. Before Alabama could even complete its opening script, the Crimson Tide trailed Kentucky 7-0, with the Wildcats controlling the ball again.

We were off to the races after that in Lexington, Kentucky, with both teams flexing their defensive horsepower early. The Tide's self-inflicted wounds hurt their first-half performance, and they trailed at halftime.

"It was just bad quarterback play by me," Russell said. "I made simple mistakes."

The Tide's signal caller shook it off, though, leading Alabama to 32 unanswered points in the second half as Alabama secured a 45-17 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats in Russell's first start on the road in the SEC.

Russell finished the day completing 70% of his passes for 188 yards, one touchdown, and two first-half interceptions. In the second half, he had 65 yards and his first passing touchdown of the season to Rico Scott.

"He's a fighter," Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said after the game.

“At the end of the half, the pick, totally forced ball that shouldn’t have been thrown,” Russell told reporters after the game. “The fumble, if I had better ball security. The throwing lane on the first pick. Just a throwing lane on the first pick. Finding the throwing lanes.”

Russell's teammates helped him work through the struggles, with quarterbacks coach Bryant Ellis and wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams spotted with him on the sideline.

"I felt guys’ presence every time,” Russell said. “Even when things were going bad, coming off the sideline after the pick, after the fumble, the guys were just phenomenal.”

"He stays cool and calm. He believes in himself," DeBoer said.

The Tide's renewed ground game can be Russell's best friend and help make his life easier, if he'll utilize it. DeBoer said that he needs to hand off more in the run game, and when the Tide watches the tape back on Sunday, they'll see several rushing lanes missed because Russell was trying to force things early. In the second half, he was more patient, taking what the defense gave him, leading to the Tide's 150 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

No. 12 Alabama advances to 2-0 and 1-0 in SEC play this season. The Tide's next game will come on Saturday, September 19, when it hosts Florida State.
