Keelon Russell’s A-Day Showcase Didn’t Surprise Head Coach Kalen DeBoer
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama redshirt freshman quarterback Keelon Russell captivated fans during Saturday's A-Day scrimmage, with the former five-star prospect throwing for over 200 yards and four touchdowns on a hot Saturday afternoon inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Just over 20,000 fans were in attendance, but plenty more saw the videos of Russell's performance circulate on social media, showcasing the big-play threat he provides with his arm.

While Saturday's performance may have shocked some fans and media members, it wasn't surprising to Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, who has worked with Russell every day since he first stepped foot on campus in January 2025.
"Sometimes you got to be careful not to oversell what's happening each and every day on our practice fields, but that was more of the same from what we've seen from Keelon," DeBoer said on Monday with Tide 100.9's Christian Miller. "Keelon got a chance to take advantage of a few extra reps, and I thought he did exactly that, and that's what he should do, and I'm proud of him for it.
"Both of them are getting better each and every day. He certainly has, again, taken advantage of the opportunity. I thought it was a phenomenal week for him last week. I thought he grew a lot from scrimmage two to scrimmage three. He's been making plays. Austin has been making plays all spring long."
Mack was limited on Saturday after DeBoer revealed he was dinged up, and only took one of Alabama's six final drives during the scrimmage, all of them in the redzone. He still ended the day with a touchdown pass to Rico Scott and had over 100 yards through the air.
"Austin was a little bit limited, but Austin's highlight reel would be something that people would be super impressed with, as well," DeBoer said.
