After Georgia's 28-7 victory over Alabama, which secured back-to-back SEC Championships, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart shared his thoughts on the team's performance with the media.

Smart was asked about the importance of the Bulldogs' blocked punt, which occurred in the middle of the first quarter and positioned Georgia at the Crimson Tide’s 21-yard line. This play ultimately led to the Bulldogs' first touchdown in their victory on Saturday. He was also asked how special it was to see senior wide receiver Cole Speer make the effort to force the blocked punt.

“Just an unbelievable kid. I mean, he’s sacrificed so much for this program. It gets me emotional thinking about it.” Smart added, “I thought it hit right in between the eyes of doing it for the seniors, and so many of them have been through heartbreaking losses that they wanted to do it, and Kirk Benedict had a great rush plan and came after the punt and got a huge block.”

Smart highlighted the impact of his defense in tonight's game, emphasizing their aggressive play as a key factor in the victory. Georgia limited Alabama to just 209 total yards and held them to a staggering minus three yards rushing. Additionally, the defense forced Alabama to convert only 3 of 14 third-down attempts.

He also touched on the younger players on his defense who have consistently improved week in and week out. Smart also gave some praise to his defensive coordinator, Glenn Schumann, after the conference championship win.

“It was a huge difference. It was a domination on that side of the ball, and a lot of it came with a chip on their shoulder from the last one, and it came with a chip on their shoulder from improving.” Smart said, “They're getting better, young kids are growing up, you know it's a lot of naysayers out there for Schuman and his staff, and they never flinched. They kept getting better and kept growing the players, and they played really well tonight.”

Smart reflected on freshman center Malachi Toliver’s performance tonight in the absence of starting center Drew Bobo. He spoke highly of the freshman and expressed his concerns regarding Bobo’s absence going into this game.

“The biggest thing is getting the snap there right, that's 50 percent of the battle. Just get the snap there and get it accurate, and that was my concern. I knew that he’d play well, play hard, and play physical. He did that, but you know, I think the way we practice and what he went through last year prepared him for this year.” Smart added, “That kid had an injury, an ankle injury, and then he was out for another two to three weeks with an injury, so I mean the kid's been through it. He’s stepped up tonight, played well in Drew’s absence, and I'm proud of him.”

Smart was asked about the reasons behind Georgia's improved ability to stop Alabama on third down during Saturday's win. This was a notable change from their previous matchup in September, when Alabama converted 13 of 19 third downs. In contrast, during Saturday's SEC championship game, Georgia limited Alabama to just 3 out of 14 conversions on third down.

“I explain it by a great game plan by Coach Schumann. He studies a lot of tape. He puts things together, and he has confidence in his plan. The defensive staff has got those guys to believe and play hard. They got a little chip on their shoulder, they wanted another shot, and we executed better, and you know, affected the quarterback more.” Smart said, “He (Ty Simpson) played almost out of his mind last time we played them, and a lot of the calls were the same. Calls weren't different, the execution was a little better, and the rush was a little better.”

Georgia has officially secured its place in the College Football Playoffs. The team has won consecutive SEC championships and will receive a first-round bye in the playoffs, as Smart’s record against Alabama improves to 2-7.
