Lawson Named to the Lott Trophy Player of the Week
This past weekend was a huge success for the Crimson Tide as they defeated SEC Rival Georgia 41-34. Crimson fans can rejoice once more as a player was recognized this week for an award.
Deontae Lawson was named Lott Trophy Player of the Week. This award honors the best performance from a defensive player each week.
Georgia's offense struggled to find a rhythm as Alabama's defense dominated the game. Georgia committed four turnovers—three interceptions and one fumble—and went just three for fifteen on third-down conversions. They managed only seven points in the first half. Several Alabama defenders stepped up and made key plays throughout the game.
Lawson, a junior from Mobile, recorded 10 total tackles (7 solo, 3 assisted), one sack, and two tackles for loss against Georgia. So far this season, the linebacker has 31 total tackles (17 solo, 14 assisted) and remains a crucial part of the defense under Kane Wommack.
The four-star linebacker played at Mobile Christian School. Lawson was ranked the No. 45 player nationally by 247Sports. Over his high school career (2018-2020), he posted 334 total tackles, 19 sacks, 38 tackles for loss and 6 interceptions. He had offers from Flordia Atlantic, Chattanooga, Central Michigan, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, and Auburn.
In 2023, Lawson solidified his role as the starting middle linebacker. He was named to the watchlist for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker. Over 11 games, Lawson recorded 67 total tackles (32 solo, 35 assisted), 5.5 tackles for loss (-26 yards), and three sacks (-21 yards). By the end of the season, he was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award.
With the win against Georgia, Alabama's quest to stay undefeated continues. They will head to Nashville to face Vanderbilt, who will be looking to play spoiler as they move forward with a 2-2 record.
