NCAA Sets One-Time Transfer Portal Date
On Sep. 17, the NCAA announced a change to the college football transfer system by eliminating the spring transfer portal window and moving to a single transfer period. This decision came as part of the NCAA's ongoing effort to simplify transfer rules and create more stability for both athletes and programs.

On Tuesday, the NCAA Division I Committee finalized the dates for the new one-time transfer window. The 2025 college football transfer portal will officially open on January 2 and close on January 16, giving student-athletes a two-week period to enter their names into the portal.
The adjustment marks a significant shift from previous years, when players had two opportunities to transfer, one in the winter after the regular season and another brief window in the spring following spring practices. By removing the spring window, the NCAA aims to reduce roster instability.
The change could play a role on how teams approach recruiting, roster management, and scholarship distribution, as coaches will now need to address all transfer needs within a 15-day period.
