New England Patriots select Mac Jones as Team Captain
The New England Patriots voted Mac Jones to be one of the team's permanent captains for the 2022-2023 season prior to the team's week one matchup.
"I want to become an even better leader," Jones said. "I think we have a great group of guys around us that make everything better."
There were six permanent team captains announced, Jones being one of two on offense. Offensive lineman David Andrews returns as captain for the sixth time to the Patriots offense.
Jones was selected 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Patriots despite the team bringing back Cam Newton. Newton was expected to start initially, but things changed during training camp.
Jones earned the starting job, and led the Patriots to the playoffs against the Buffalo Bills. The division rivals squared off in the wild card round, with the Bills advancing.
To cap off his rookie season, Jones was selected to the Pro Bowl, after a few AFC quarterbacks dropped out.
This is not the first time Jones has been voted on as a captain by his teammates. He was selected as a co-captain at Alabama, following his historic 2020 season.
Jones' name, hands and feet are forever engraved in cement at Denny Chimes with fellow captains DeVonta Smith, Alex Leatherwood and Landon Dickerson.
Jones' former teammates Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts were recently announced as captains for their teams prior to the season. Tua Tagovailoa captains the Miami Dolphins and Jalen Hurts captains the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, all three quarterbacks on the Alabama 2017 and 2018 teams are starters and team captains in the NFL.
Led by Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins battle the Patriots and Mac Jones Sunday at noon CT.
