
Former Alabama QB to Miss Final Preseason Game with Injury
Former Alabama starting quarterback Mac Jones will miss the San Francisco 49ers' final preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday with a knee sprain, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told the media on Tuesday.

Jones, a former first-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL draft, signed with the 49ers after serving as Trevor Lawrence's backup for the 2024 season. The Patriots traded Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars before the 2024 season.
Jones, a native of Jacksonville, appeared in 10 games last season for Jacksonville, completing 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns. Jones also rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown with the Jaguars.
In March 2025, Jones signed a two-year, $2.5 million deal with the 49ers to serve as Brock Purdy's backup. Jones has appeared in both of the 49ers' preseason games this August, passing for 209 yards.
During his time at Alabama, Jones was a threat during the 2020 season, completing 77.4 percent of his passes for 4,500 yards nd 41 touchdowns. Jones placed third in the Heisman Trophy voting and was named a Consensus All-American for his 2020 efforts. He also won the Davey O'Brien Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and the Manning Award in 2020.
In his NFL career, Jones is entering his fifth season in the league, completing 65.9 percent of his passes for 10,590 yards and 54 touchdowns.
