Which Position Group Stood Out During Alabama's Scrimmage?

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama completed its first scrimmage of fall camp on Thursday morning inside Bryant-Denny Stadium, with plenty of news and notes detailing what happened in the scrimmage on Tide 1009.com.

Following the scrimmage, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked which position group stood out the most in the over 100 plays the Crimson Tide ran on Thursday morning.

"I mean, there's times we had a couple tipped balls, so the DBs did a nice job making a play because they're picking it right up off the ground, and those plays aren't always made; it wasn't just gimmes," DeBoer told reporters on Thursday. "I thought there were some good plays where we had yards after the catch. I thought the running backs were chewing up some yards there and got better as the scrimmage went along, you know."

Following the scrimmage, sources in attendance told Tide 100.9 that senior safety Bray Hubbard was a force to be reckoned with, flying around the field and making plays. Third-year safety Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. collected an interception, which was featured in Alabama's post-scrimmage hype video posted to X.

We were also told the second-year safety Ivan Taylor got meaningful reps with the first-team defense opposite Bray Hubbard, with the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ike Taylor making the most of his opportunities on Thursday.

"So I think our D-line's just been really consistent. I don't want to take that for granted, so I should mention that. I have an expectation for them. I think that they've done a nice job. So I thought the tight ends, as the scrimmage went along, got better. So getting guys in every snap that we take, it matters, especially with the younger guys across the board on our football team."

Rave reviews continue to come in about USC transfer defensive lineman Devan Thompkins, who has been a wrecking ball in fall camp and the first scrimmage. We were told that Thompkins, alongside Oregon transfer Terrance Green and Mississippi State transfer Kedrick Bingley-Jones, were among the first on defense on Thursday, with the Crimson Tide featuring a deep defensive line group.

The defensive line is a group that got significantly bigger in the offseason, with defensive coordinator Kane Wommack sharing that Alabama went from near the bottom in the SEC in defensive line size to top five in the conference with the new additions.

The Crimson Tide will return to the practice field on Sunday, August 16. The Crimson Tide will scrimmage again in one week for the second time this fall camp in preparation for Alabama's first game against East Carolina on Saturday, September 5.
