TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- A legendary Alabama football official is undergoing recovery after suffering a hip injury last Friday.

Eddie Conyers sustained an injury after a fall last Friday, which led to his hip surgery. Sunday, he underwent his hip operation in Birmingham, and will return to Tuscaloosa for physical therapy.
The 96-year-old has worked with the Alabama football team for more than 62 years, where he was first hired by Paul "Bear" Bryant in 1963 and has been dedicated to Alabama football since. While his hiring story is a simple one, he remembers it clearly. Conyer's was approached by Bear Bryant and asked to help out as an official during their practices, and he immediately agreed, sparking a legendary career as the program's most committed official.
Eddie Conyers has proudly served as the team's practice referee since 1962. He has had the opportunity to witness historic moments with the Crimson Tide as they won 12 national championships, 24 SEC Championships, and undergone 10 head coach changes since he has been working with the team. He has been able to witness the leadership of prominent figures on the team, like Gene Stallings and Nick Saban.
While serving as a light to many players and team staff, he does not plan to stop anytime soon. During an interview with Rick Karle, Conyers joked, "I'm thinking of retiring when I reach 100."
Conyers is respected for his loyalty and love of Alabama football. While it is uncertain how long his recovery process will take, there is hope that we will witness his return to the practice field soon.
