Many saw week 5 as one of the more dull weekends for SEC football. While the games were not jaw dropping, there was still enough excitement to hold our attention. If you missed any of the action, here is a quick rundown:

  • #6 Texas A&M narrowly escaped with a win over Arkansas. The Aggies overcame a 14-point deficit to beat the Hogs 35-28 in overtime.
  • Tennessee gave #12 Georgia a run for its money, but the Vols could not stop Todd Gurley from having a career day. The Bulldogs alluded the upset with a 35-32 victory.
  • Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk sparked two 4th quarter touchdown drives that helped deliver the 21-20 upset win over South Carolina.

All of those things happened in a week that was deemed uneventful before it even got started. We cannot even begin to imagine what will happen in this weekend's exciting slate of games:

  • Florida at Tennessee

11:00 am CT on the SEC Network

Florida had a week to recover from its loss to Alabama, which it greatly needed. This week, success on offense will depend on the play of quarterback Jeff Driskel. He will have to be more effective through the air to keep the attack effective. Ultimately though, both sides of the ball need to show some drastic improvement if they want to win in Knoxville.

Tennessee's biggest issue is allowing big plays to develop. If Driskel cannot complete passes, the Gators will rely on the ground and Tennessee is ranked dead last in rush defense. On a positive note, the Vols' strong ground game behind Hurd shows that the offense can keep up on the scoreboard if its' defense falters. If Justin Worley stays healthy, Tennessee should be able to pick up yards on the ground and through the air.

It will be fun to watch these evenly match rivals go at it inside a loud Neyland Stadium. With the SEC East still being up for grabs, this matchup is more important than you may think.

  • #6 Texas A&M at #12 Mississippi State

    11:00 am CT on ESPN

While Texas A&M was able to squeak out a win last weekend, they will not have as much room for error in this game. Kenny Hill passed for 95 yards in the first half against the Hogs, a season low for him. Hilll and his receiving corps has to avoid a slow start in this game. On defense, the primary focus should be trying to figure out a way to slow down Dak Prescott. If they do that, they win the game.

Mississippi State proved that they are ready to compete following a big win over LSU on the road two weeks ago. Now they can become frontrunners with a win over A&M.  The Bulldogs have to score points in order to keep up because their pass defense in the ranked last in the SEC, and that is not good news when facing Kenny Hill.

Mississippi State has not faced an offense that is as dynamic as the one they will face this weekend. One could make the argument that the same goes for Texas A&M. This will be a huge game in terms of SEC West standings.

  • #3 Alabama at #11 Ole Miss

    2:30 pm CT on CBS

Blake Sims and the offense are getting better each week. However, the offense will be facing the toughest defense they have seen all season on Saturday. Sims throwing to Amari Cooper is a no brainer, so the Tide might want to solidify the ground game to keep the Rebels' defense honest. On defense, minimizing the passing game will be very important if they want to avoid an upset.

On Ole Miss' side, quarterback Bo Wallace will have to play like a seasoned pro in order to score on this stingy Alabama defense. The Rebels' cannot afford turnovers if they want a chance in this one. The defense will have a tough time covering Cooper, but it has the talent to do it. Keep the Tide's offense off the field and your chances of winning will increase significantly.

This may be the biggest game in Ole Miss history as College Gameday will be coming to Oxford for the first time ever so Alabama better be prepared for one of the most hostile crowds its ever seen in Mississippi.

  • Vanderbilt at #11 Georgia

3:00 pm CT on the SEC Network

A South Carolina loss on Saturday put the Bulldogs right back in the driver's seat for the SEC East. Can they take advantage of the opportunity? Georgia's offense is powered by Todd Gurley, who is averaging over 150 rushing yards per game. Huston Mason will need to develop into a better passer as the season moves forward. The defense has had an up and down year, but they should have a good outing against the Commodores.

Vanderbilt has dropped off significantly in terms of talent this season. Their most impressive performance came in a loss to South Carolina. The root to most of the Commodores' problems are on offense where they have already played four different quarterbacks this season. However, the issue will be figuring out how to stop Gurley. Derek Mason will need to coach the game of his life to have a chance.

We won't rule out the possibly of an upset because anything can happen in the SEC. Although it was two completely teams, do not forget, the Commodores upset Georgia last season.

  • #15 LSU at #5 Auburn

    6:00 pm CT on ESPN

By now, Auburn should be comfortable in tight games after having a few close call already this season. The Tigers' defense is improving each and every week, which is something to make note of as they face a struggling LSU offense. However, Gus Malzahn's unique offense is still the bread and butter of this team. They will need to stick to their strengths to ensure victory over LSU.

Les Miles announced earlier this week that he would be starting freshman quarterback Brandon Harris. It sounds like a bad thing to start a freshman, but Harris gives LSU the best chance to beat Auburn. The defense will have its hands full slowing down Nick Marshall. If they stop Marshall, it will take some of the pressure off of the offense.

This rivalry is known for coming down to the wire each and every year. If history indeed repeats itself, this game could go either way.

  • South Carolina at Kentucky

6:30 pm CT on the SEC Network

A loss to Missouri last weekend puts South Carolina in a tough position in the SEC East. They really can't afford another conference loss, especially this one. The Gamecocks are ranked near the bottom in every offensive and defensive category. If they want to beat Kentucky, they have to improve on both sides of the ball..

The Wildcats have already proven that they are an improved team. Patrick Towles is third in the conference in passing yards per game, which looks good as they get ready to face one of the worst pass defenses in the country. The challenge on defense will be slowing down running back Mike Davis. If they take advantage of the Gamecocks' weaknesses, Kentucky will have a great chance of pulling the upset at home.

The Wildcats' will make significant strides in the SEC East with a win over South Carolina. This is one to keep an eye on if you are looking to watch a nail biter.
