A significant severe weather threat is shaping up in West Alabama this weekend. The National Weather Service in Birmingham has already placed much of the state in an enhanced risk area for storms on Saturday. Threats could include damaging winds in excess of 70 miles an hour as well as tornadoes.

ABC 33/40 Chief Meteorologist James Spann posted the following this morning:

Thunderstorms on Saturday will be capable of producing hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. In terms of timing, it looks like a daytime event. Strong to severe storms could enter West Alabama as early as 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., and the threat should be over by Saturday evening. We will more specific about the timing tomorrow.

Heavy rain is another concern; rain amounts Friday and Saturday will be in the 2-3 inch range; the ground is relatively saturated and flooding is very possible.
