Stampede Suffers a 51-Point Loss at Home
On Friday, September 13th, Paul W. Bryant hosted the 6A Hueytown Gophers, and the Stampede failed to score a single point in a devastating 51-0 loss.
The Stampede defense struggled out of the gate, allowing a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Hueytown's Junior runningback Anthony Robinson on the first drive, which became the theme of the first quarter, with the Gophers scoring 22 points and Hueytown holding a commanding 22-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Paul W. Bryant's offense failed to answer to the Gophers' scoring assault, resulting in several three-and-outs and a fatigued Stampede defense that stayed on the field for the majority of the game. The Gophers took advantage of Bryant's exhausted defense, going on another scoring spree in the second half as Hueytown extended their huge lead.
Hueytown led 29-0 entering into the second half. The Stampede defense, like in the first half, was unable to contain the Gophers, who scored 22 unanswered points in the second half. Bryant struggled to establish offensive momentum, dropping to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in area play. The Stampede have been outscored 105-13 in their two region games this season.
Christion Jones, the head coach at Paul W. Bryant, is in unfamiliar circumstances in his first season, with an 0-4 record entering week five. Jones only knows how to win, having won two BCS National Championships with the Crimson Tide as a Wide Receiver from 2011 to 2014. Jones, who is in his first year as head coach, has a difficult struggle as he attempts to rebuild this team from the ground up.
Christion Jones and the Stampede will have a bye next week, allowing Bryant to forget about Friday night and focus on their first victory of the season on Friday, September 27th at home against the 3-0 6A Chelsea Hornets (Chelsea, AL).
Hueytown got its first win of the season on Friday, improving the Gophers' record to 1-2. Hueytown will aim to build on this victory and get their record to 500 next Friday, September 20th, when they face the 4-0 6A Bessemer City Tigers at home.
