Pickens County Tornadoes

The Aliceville Yellowjackets (4-2, 2-1) went on the road to Pickens County (4-1, 3-0) to take on the Tornadoes in a rivalry game. The Yellowjackets overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to win 39-22 and give Pickens County its first loss of the season. The victory ties the all-time series between the two schools at 41-41-1.

With spring football games happening all around Tuscaloosa, it is time to feature some of the most notable high school football programs around the Druid City!

The Linden Patriots (15-0) defeated the Pickens County Tornadoes (11-4) for the second time this season to win the AHSAA Class 1A State Championship. Thursday will be a big day for high school football fans in central Alabama. Four teams from the middle part of the state- Linden, Pickens County, Montgomery Catholic, and Pleasant Grove- will all be playing for glory across the state.

After a devastating loss to end a Cinderella season, the Northside Rams have been eliminated from playoff contention. Still, Gordo, ACA, and Pickens County all won and advanced to the semifinals of the AHSAA playoffs. With the turf fields of Bryant-Denny Stadium looking green as ever, it is crunch time for the three teams if they want to catch the elusive “blue map.”

Junior quarterback and safety Javion Belle led the Pickens County Tornadoes (10-3) past the Hubbertville Lions (9-3) 40-24 in the round three of the AHSAA Class 1A playoffs. Belle seized the momentum for good for the Tornadoes by cashing in a 35-yard pick-six to close the half and send Pickens County into the locker room with a 20-12 halftime lead.

With less than three weeks left of high school football left in the 2020 season, Tuscaloosa and the surrounding area have been left with only four schools still in the playoff race. While the legendary “blue map” is still possible for any of these four teams- Gordo, ACA, Northside, and Pickens County- the three 4A schools are on a collision course that could happen in the semifinals or even the championship game.

As Round 2 of the playoffs looms, only one of the teams, ACA, will be playing from home. Every other team will be traveling to every corner of the state. From Madison County and Decatur in north Alabama to Opelika in east Alabama, teams around the Druid City are fighting hard to keep their hopes alive for a state title game appearance in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The Pickens County Tornadoes (8-3, 6-1) bounced back from last week's defeat to rival Gordo by defeating the Woodville Panthers (5-6, 4-2) in the first round of the AHSAA Class 1A Playoffs 33-8.
