Top Alabama Prospect Narrows Down Schools to Six
The top in-state prospect for the class of 2023 James Smith has narrowed down his schools to six, Florida, Ohio State, Auburn, Georgia, Alabama State, and Alabama.
The five-star defensive lineman ranks at No. 18 nationally, No. 2 in defensive lineman, and No. 1 in the state of Ala., according to 247Sports.
"Possesses requisite size/frame. Consistently flashes vs. the run and as a pass rusher. Bull in a china shop who made plays as a freshman with size, strength, tenacity. Impressive closing speed relative to size. Physicality really stands out for such a young prospect. Technical development and improved body control could make for truly elite front-line defender," said Midlands region recruiting analyst for 247Sports Gabe Brooks.
Smith joins fellow five-star teammate Qua Russaw in announcing his final six schools on Friday. Both play at Carver High School and helped the Wolverines to a 5-6 record, third place in 6A Region 2, and a playoff appearance where the team lost 56-6 to Hillcrest.
Since his offer from Alabama in December of 2020, Smith has attended a school camp and two unofficial visits.
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Alabama has a 51.7% chance to land the upcoming senior.
