The month of December kicks off both the bowl season and hiring season across the college football spectrum.

One of college football’s most high-profile assistant coaches is looking to return to the head coaching ranks.

BamaOnline.com senior analyst Travis Reier dove into the coaching possibilities for Lane Kiffin during Wednesday’s edition of Southern Fried Sports.

Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has been mentioned for multiple vacant head coaching positions across the country. He has been floated as a possibility at Houston, South Florida and Oregon prior to the hiring of South Florida head coach Willie Taggart.

Reier reminded his audience of the competition that Kiffin faces in landing a head coaching position. While Oregon hired Willie Taggart, the host of Southern Fried Sports floated Houston and USF as an attractive option for Kiffin that’s not in a power conference.

“USF, Houston, ok, they’re not Power 5 jobs but they’re high enough in the pecking order when you look at the Group of 5 jobs out there that absolutely you give those jobs consideration.” Reier said.

Reier detailed the reasons that these two schools could realistically land someone like Kiffin.

“USF and Houston can pay you enough to make it worth your while and they’re very much very winnable situations. You can win big at USF. It’s been done before.” Reier said.

The BamaOnline.com senior analyst cited Tom Herman and Kevin Sumlin of former Houston Cougar head coaches who made the leap to the upper echelon of college football.

Kiffin’s name has also been mentioned as a candidate to become LSU’s offensive coordinator. While Reier thinks that Kiffin’s possible departure from Alabama could hurt Nick Saban relative to playoff preparation, the host of Southern Fried Sports thinks another SEC coach has more to lose in the long term.

“For 2017 and beyond, it’s Ed Orgeron with the most to lose right now. Because if not Lane, who for that LSU offense?” Reier said.
