Tuscaloosa Hosts 9/11 Stair Climb at UA
Tuscaloosa, AL. - In a solemn tribute to the valor and sacrifice of first responders, Alabama Athletics, in concert with the University of Alabama Police Department (UAPD), will host the Tuscaloosa 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Coleman Coliseum on Wednesday, September 11.
This year’s event, for the first time, extends an invitation to the public to register and partake in the commemoration.
The morning’s proceedings will commence with a pre-climb ceremony at 7:45 a.m. CT, setting a tone of reverence and reflection. Following this, a closed climb, reserved exclusively for first responders, will begin at 8:15 a.m. CT, offering them the opportunity to honor their fallen brethren in a sacred and intimate setting.
The public climb is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. CT, allowing community members to participate in this profound act of remembrance.
Participation in the Memorial Stair Climb is free of charge, but registration is required. The climb itself is a formidable challenge, consisting of 2,200 steps up and 2,200 steps down, mirroring the 110 floors of the World Trade Center, symbolizing the harrowing journey undertaken by first responders on that fateful day.
This Memorial Stair Climb serves as a poignant homage to the courageous members of the FDNY, NYPD, Port Authority Police (PAPD), and EMS who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. The University of Alabama Police Department began this annual observance in 2018, fostering a tradition of reflection, honor, and community solidarity.
