UAB Head Coach Bill Clark Stepping Down

UAB Blazers head coach Bill Clark announced via Twitter on Friday morning his intention to step down from his position, citing health concerns.

Clark compiled an impressive 49-26 record as head coach of the Blazers and is most known for helping revive the program after its termination in 2014.

Clark's post read, "Retiring as the UAB head coach is the hardest decision I've ever had to make, but my future health and well-being depend on it," the post continued, "I am stepping down, but I am not walking away. My roots and my heart are here and they will stay here."

"I will play a different role from here, but you can always count of me in that number. I will always be a Blazer."

Clark, a former Jacksonville State Gamecock, began his coaching career in 1990 as an assistant for Piedmont High School in Alabama. After two seasons, Clark joined the Tuscaloosa County staff, where he would continue honing his craft for a few years.

The Anniston, AL native bounced between a few high school football programs in the early 2000s, serving in various assistant coach roles. Finally, in 2007, Clark would begin his collegiate career, taking over as defensive coordinator at South Alabama.

Clark spent five seasons with the Jaguars before taking his first head coaching job at Jacksonville State in 2013. In his lone season as the leader of the Gamecocks, Clark put together an 11-4 record and led the program to its first ever playoff victory.

After a very successful one-year stint with Jacksonville State, UAB brought Clark in as its next head coach in 2014, and his success continued.

In six seasons as the head coach of the Blazers, Clark's squads made five bowl appearances and won two conference titles.

Although his stint was short, Clark's impressive resume easily places him as one of the top coaches in program history.
