UK Beat Writer Jon Hale Details Brad Bohannon’s Impact at UK [Audio]
In a matter of a few days, Brad Bohannon will be formally introduced as Alabama’s new baseball coach.
During Thursday’s edition of The Suttles Approach, Kentucky Wildcats beat writer for the Louisville Courier-Journal Jon Hale provided his insights on Bohannon’s background as an assistant baseball coach at Kentucky beginning with his coaching reputation in Lexington.
“Really favorably. If you talk to people around the Kentucky baseball program, I think most of them thought this was just a matter of time before he got one of these jobs.” Hale said.
One of the areas that Alabama’s new baseball coach has been complimented the most is in recruiting. Hale discussed how Bohannon was able to build his reputation on the recruiting trail.
“He’s just one of those guys who it seems was able to go into homes and immediately make connections with players and prospects and their families.” Hale said.
Bohannon spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Kentucky with nine seasons as their recruiting coordinator. The UK beat writer weighed Bohannon’s impact with Kentucky and how Wildcats baseball missed him after leaving for Auburn.
“Bohannon seemed always to be willing to put in that work. He did most of the recruiting on Gary Henderson’s staff. Gary (Henderson) was kind of a recruiting finisher kind of guy, I think, as a head coach and Bohannon did almost all the leg work.” Hale stated. “I think it’s fair to say probably a lot people around the program, when Bohannon left to go to Auburn, thought that was maybe the beginning of the end of Gary Henderson’s time at Kentucky.” Hale said.
Hale later touched on Bohannon’s journey through the coaching ranks, John Cohen’s growing influence in the SEC baseball community and how Bohannon’s last wave of recruits to Lexington laid the ground work for UK’s NCAA Tournament run in 2017.
The Suttles Approach airs every weekday from noon-2 PM on Tide 102.9/100.9 and the radioPup app.
