Williams was previously named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which is also awarded to the player of the year in college football.

A total of 45 student-athletes were nominated to the watch list, with 10 semifinalists to be announced in November and three finalists in early December. The award will be presented on December 12 during ESPN's College Football Awards Show.

Alabama has had three recipients of the award, with Derrick Henry becoming the program's first in 2015, Tua Tagovailoa won it in 2018, and DeVonta Smith was the most recent winner in the 2020 season. Henry and Smith also took home Heisman Trophies.

As a freshman at Alabama last season, Williams caught 48 passes while leading the Tide in receiving yards (865) and receiving touchdowns (8). His eight receiving touchdowns were the second-most in the SEC and the second-most among freshman receivers last season.

Williams was also named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, awarded annually to the most versatile player in college football.
