Alabama Adds No. 1 In-State Prospect to 2024 Class
The Alabama Crimson Tide stays ahead of the curve in recruiting. The Tide added its third commitment of the 2024 class on Tuesday. Jaylen Mbakwe, out of Clay-Chalkville High School, took to social media to announce his commitment to the Crimson Tide.
Mbakwe is considered the No. 1 recruit in the state of Alabama in the '24 class according to 247Sports. The 5-foot-11 junior is considered the No. 4 cornerback in the class.
Mbakwe played on both sides of the ball and as a kick returner for Clay-Chalkville, he helped the Cougars win the 2021 6A State Championship.
Mbakwe was recruited by defensive line coach Freddie Roach and cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson. He selected the Crimson Tide over Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Texas A&M.
“I am closest with coach Roach and coach T-Rob,” Mbakwe told On3 Sports. “It’s like a big brother/ little brother relationship. They make me feel like a little brother how they treat me, and I like their coaching style. It really fits me.”
The Crimson Tide extended him a scholarship offer in late January and Mbakwe revealed that after his visit in June he had made up his mind.
As a sophomore on and undefeated team 247Sports listed his stats as 11 tackles, 6 pass-breakups with 2 interceptions on defense. They also credit him with 36 receptions for 677 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Mbakwe becomes the third commitment of the 2024 class, joining Martavious Collins and Perry "Uno" Thompson. With 18 months until the 2024 early signing date the Crimson Tide already has claim to the No. 8 recruiting class.
