Alabama Freshmen Stand Out on Day 1
You can feel it in the humid air - football is just around the corner. That reality set in even more on Wednesday, as the University of Alabama began the Road to 19 once again with the start of Fall Camp.
It was an open media practice, and we were able to view around 20 minutes of the first day of camp. While that may not seem like a long period of time, we saw several new faces - namely, freshman Ryan Williams in his first look at the University of Alabama.
Shortly after the media were allowed onto the practice field, WIlliams stole much of the spotlight. He looked fluid in his route running and adjusted to the ball well in individual passing drills with Ty Simpson.
Williams should be entering his senior season at Saraland, but reclassified to the 2024 class and joined the Crimson Tide a year early. Despite his seemingly smaller stature - Williams is listed as 165 pounds on Alabama's roster - his athleticism shined through on day one.
It's early - just the first practice of Fall camp, it's easy to see why so many are excited about what Williams can do in his career at Alabama. He didn't catch every pass, and it wasn't live reps (that we saw), but Williams looks to be in a good spot beginning his career at Alabama.
Another Freshman Could Make an Impact
In addition to Williams, tight end-turned-wide receiver Caleb Odom caught attention early. Standing at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, his size is immediately notable, with a considerable difference between Williams and Odom when the two stood next to one another.
It's not just his size that made Odom stand out, however. He moves well for being a bigger wide receiver, and his length is notable. He can be seen towering over the other receivers when in the line.
Other Notables From Receivers at Fall Camp Day One
The third freshman that stood out was wide receiver Bubba Hampton. He showed the ability to quickly locate the ball and was fluid in his motions. His speed is something to watch for Alabama.
Germie Bernard looks bigger than he did in the Spring. He appears to command the wide receiver room.
We got our first look at Rico Scott and Amari Jefferson. Both receivers looked good in the limited viewing period. JaMarcus Shephard was drenched from head to toe working with the wide receivers.
