Alabama freshman guard Joshua Primo was selected No. 12 overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2021 NBA Draft. Primo's selection gives the Alabama Crimson Tide its second first round lottery draft pick in two years following Kira Lewis's selection in last year's draft.

The Canadian decided to declare for the NBA Draft after his strong season, he rose up draft boards and solidified his status as a first rounder with an impressive appearance at the NBA Combine this summer. His selection makes Nate Oats the first Alabama basketball coach to produce back-to-back first round draft picks since David Hobbs, 25 years ago.

Primo enrolled early after reclassifying into the class of 2020 and turned in an SEC All-Freshman Team season. The 6-foot-6, 190 pound 5-star recruit averaged 8.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and almost one assist per game. As the youngest player in the draft pool, Primo became the Southeastern Conference's first selection in this year's draft.

Primo was instrumental in the Crimson Tide's SEC regular season and tournament championship season. The freshman started in 19 games and made 30 appearances throughout the season averaging 22 minutes per game.

Primo had his strongest games against the Crimson Tide's biggest rivals, he scored a season high 22-points against LSU and Auburn and additionally put in 19-points against the Georgia Bulldogs.

The San Antonio Spurs finished 33-39 and finished in 10th place in the Western Conference. The starting shooting guard Lonnie Walker IV scored 11.2 points per game this past season. San Antonio is a perennially strong franchise in the NBA undergoing a retooling. Head coach Greg Popovich is a five-time NBA champion and has had particular success in the league with international players such as Tony Parker and  Manu Ginoboli and many others.
