Since Kalen DeBoer was hired at Alabama in January 2024, the Crimson Tide has not played a game in which they had fewer penalties than the other team. On the road, Alabama is averaging 7.3 penalties per game.

Penalties can set the offense back or allow the opposing offense to stay on the field and extend drives. The Crimson Tide has seen several times where a costly penalty kept the opposing offense on the field, where that offense went down the field and scored points on what would have been a stop for the defense.

How does the Crimson Tide go about fixing the penalty issues on the team?

"There's a lot of consequences that go along, especially the foolish penalties," DeBoer said. "The ones that happened after the whistle and things like that. That will continue to be the case. There's just got to be better judgment when you get into those spots, and you know the quarterback will be protected and you can't live in that gray area. All offseason that was the point of emphasis and we can't afford to have every guy have his one-off time where it's like, OK, that was his mistake. Next game it's a different guy. We got to learn and understand -- we talk about everything from what we see in other games that happen in college football and the NFL, whether it was out of season or even here after the Week 0 games. It's certainly addressed, and now the guys just got to do it. And when they don't do it and make those mistakes, then there's consequences that we've had and already dealt with here, going into this week."
