Alabama Practice Report 10/19: Barnett Absent; LB Mosley Playing Scout-Team QB

Alabama returned to the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields on Monday, two days after defeating then-No. 9 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The Crimson Tide practiced in shells (helmets, shoulder pads and shorts) in preparation for its next opponent, Tennessee, this Saturday.

Observations:

- Center Ryan Kelly, who left during the first half of last Saturday's win over Texas A&M, did not participate in offensive line drills during the media's lone viewing period. He stood off to the side next to trainers, wearing a black, non-contact jersey. On Monday, Alabama coach Nick Saban again said Kelly has a concussion but should be able to return soon.

- Sophomore J.C. Hassenauer appeared to be taking reps as the first-team center, just as he did when Kelly left the game against Texas A&M.

- Running back Kenyan Drake, the other Crimson Tide player injured against the Aggies, was back practicing without any obvious limitations, as Saban said he would earlier Monday. Saban said Drake had a "thigh bruise."

- Quarterback Blake Barnett missed practice again Monday. He missed all of last week after spending time in the hospital.

- Dillon Lee practiced with the inside linebackers. He often switches between outside and inside linebacker position drills.

- At one point, the inside linebackers were working on recovering fumbles. After running through some hurdles, the coach would roll the ball off to the side for the player to recover. The Crimson Tide has recovered four fumbles so far this season.

- A scout from the Dallas Cowboys watched practice from the sidelines.

As is customary on any game week practice, numerous Alabama players wore scout-team jerseys to emulate key Tennessee players. Here is a list of a few at a couple of different position groups:

- Perhaps in part because Barnett is still out, sophomore outside linebacker Jamey Mosley, the younger brother of C.J. Mosley, wore the No. 11 of Volunteers starting quarterback Joshua Dobbs. The Vols also have a linebacker who wears No. 11 (freshman Austin Smith), but Mosley was throwing passes with fellow outside linebacker Christian Miller during the media viewing period. Mosley was a high school quarterback at Theodore.

- Miller wore No. 9, either for sophomore defensive end Derek Barnett, or possibly even senior wideout Von Pearson because he was playing catch with Mosley.

- At running back, Ronnie Clark wore sophomore running back Jalen Hurd's No. 1, while Derrick Gore and Lawrence Erekosima wore No. 6 for former Alabama running back turned Tennessee Volunteer, Alvin Kamara. Kamara is a redshirt sophomore.

- Among the inside linebackers, redshirt sophomore Walker Jones wore sophomore Colton Jumper's No. 53, freshman Keaton Anderson wore junior Jalen Reeves-Maybin's No. 21, freshman Adonis Thomas wore freshman Darrin Kirkland Jr.'s No. 34 and redshirt freshman Gussie Busch wore sophomore Cortez McDowell's No. 20.

- In the secondary, freshman safety Shaun Burgess-Becker wore the No. 33 of senior defensive back LaDarrell McNeil. Bo Grant, a junior walk-on, wore safety Evan Berry's No. 29. (Berry is the younger brother of Vols great Eric Berry.)

Next:

Selected players will speak to the media at 1 p.m. Tuesday. At 3:40 p.m., Alabama will hold its next practice.
