Jireh Edwards Returning to Meetings Despite Injury

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama's secondary took a hit on Monday when it was announced that freshman safety Jireh Edwards would undergo surgery for an injury he suffered during practice. Despite the injury, Alabama plans to include the former five-star safety prospect to keep him mentally engaged while he physically recovers.

"That’s the question, right? Like that’s the that’s the challenge for Jireh. And we’ve already had those conversations. You know, let’s say it takes whatever x amount of weeks to get him back and ready to go. Well, when he gets back, right? If he hasn’t stayed engaged, if he’s not, you know, part of our walkthroughs, if he’s not doing things from a meeting standpoint, then all of a sudden now he gets back physically, but mentally, right? It may take two or three more weeks to go," defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said on Wednesday.

"So the challenge is when you physically can do it. Are you mentally in position to be able to go out and execute quickly? And so we’re trying to bridge that gap and narrow that margin as best as possible."

Edwards was already participating in team meetings on Wednesday morning, just two days after having surgery for an injury that will sideline him to begin Alabama's season. When Edwards returns, Alabama will quickly look for ways to get him on the field in certain packages after Edwards was shining in fall camp.

"He is obsessed with the game of football, and so he’s one that I probably, you know, don’t have to keep my thumb on him in that regard because he loves it and he’s going to stay engaged. And he’s already out there doing those things. He was in meetings this morning, which is really impressive. But he will be one that we will as soon as he gets back, right? We will want to get him on the field as quickly as possible because he will be a very productive player on our defense."

Alabama will return to the practice field on Thursday, August 27, for the 18th practice of fall camp 2026. Alabama is scheduled to open the 2026 season at home against East Carolina on Saturday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
