Alabama softball won both games in Friday’s doubleheader against Mobile to open fall play. The Tide shut out the Rams 15-0 in the opener before earning a narrow 2-1 victory in the finale.

In the circle, freshman Madison Preston threw 6.0 innings in game one of today’s doubleheader, holding Mobile scoreless while striking out five with three hits. Junior Courtney Gettins pitched 7.0 innings in Friday’s second game, allowing just one run and one hit with eight strikeouts.

GAME ONE: ALABAMA 15, MOBILE 0

Alabama got its first run on the board in the bottom of the third, as senior Sydney Booker led off the inning with a double off the wall followed by a hard-hit single from fellow senior Demi Turner. In the bottom of the fourth, junior Merris Schroder singled, stole second and then was driven home on a single by freshman Maddie Morgan to make it 2-0.

In the top of the fifth, Mobile loaded the bases with one out on a walk, hit and error but Preston got out of the jam to hold the Tide’s two-run lead. In the bottom half of the inning, a hit-by-pitch, walk and single loaded the bases before another walk improved Alabama’s lead to 3-0. After a pitching change, freshman Kaylee Tow drove in all three runs with a double in the gap to make it 6-0 and sophomore Bailey Hemphill followed with a line-drive home run in the next at-bat, stretching the score to 8-0.

Alabama loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth and Schroder found the gap in right field, husting to third for a three-run triple as the score increased to 11-0. Following a walk to freshman Kendall Beth Sides, back-to-back singles by junior Caroline Hardy and senior Carrigan Fain drove in two more to make it 13-0. A final single by freshman Kyra Lockhart swelled the lead to 15-0, which proved final.

GAME TWO: ALABAMA 2, MOBILE 1

The teams were scoreless until the bottom of the third when Sides lifted a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly. Mobile scored a run on a fielding error in the next half-inning but Alabama retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a standup RBI double from Morgan. That was all the scoring for the day as both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the game and Alabama held on to win, 2-1.

Alabama continues its fall slate on Sunday, Oct. 15, hosting Wallace State for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. CT.
