Alabama State Representative Introduces Bill to Castrate Sex Offenders
One Alabama lawmaker has proposed a bill that would force sexual offenders to be castrated before their release from prison.
The bill, which is known as HB 365, was introduced by State Representative Steve Hurst. Here's how the bill reads:
This bill would provide that any person over the age of 21 years who is convicted of certain sex offenses against a child years of age or younger would be surgically castrated before his or her release from the custody of the Department of Corrections.
The bill also states that the cost of the procedure would fall on the sex offender. Similar bills have been proposed in the past but have failed to be passed.
As the Daily Beast points out, there have been nine people wrongfully convicted of sexual assault or chide sex abuse that were later exonerated, which is a concern for a bill like this.
